If you want to spend the money on getting a whole house water softener installed. There are point-of-use filtration systems then you can use. You unscrew your filter, shower head, you screw in replaceable cartridge filter housing, and then screw your shower head back on.

Take your shower head off and screw in the filter. Screw the shower head back in. Use it.
​
Then you just take that filter out of its replaceable housing for replaceable filter cartridges. Even if you're in a rental that you don't have the means, or you don't own the property, you can do that.
